At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, travelers make an outstanding entrance. One of the biggest and busiest global gateways of the world, O’Hare finished its first crucial addition and overhaul work in the last 30 years, growing the airport by almost 350,000 square feet and in 2021, reconditioning more than 750,000 square feet of Terminal A.
A high-quality terrazzo installation provides a multilingual salutation in the new terminal, at the same time continuing the tradition of Chicago Department of Aviation in terms of trusting on terrazzo as a sturdy and strong flooring. Menconi Terrazzo of Bensenville, Illinois, was identified by the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association in its yearly Honor Award program for excellent craftsmanship and effective management of the project on the handmade installation.
The maximum of 260,000-square-foot terrazzo project was poured in place. A simple epoxy terrazzo design, glittering with all-sided mirror aggregate, includes zinc divider tiles and a five-color design that improves wayfinding through the airport. Emphasizing the simple design are high-spirited greetings at five entries in terrazzo, welcoming the travelers in 29 languages
In few sections, some current precast terrazzo tiles had to be made aloof to put up with new carousels and mechanicals. New identical terrazzo was poured in place. Later, saw-cut in a 12-by-12-inch pattern to duplicate the older ones.
