Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson has announced that she is ending her season early due to an injury. The 22-year-old British runner took to Instagram to share the news, stating, “No more races for me. Unfortunately, I picked up a small injury, but we achieved everything I had hoped to do this year, thank you for all the love and support!! see you on the track next year.”
Hodgkinson’s decision comes just weeks after her historic victory at the Paris Olympics. She became the third British woman to win Olympic 800m gold, following in the footsteps of Anne Packer (1964) and Kelly Holmes (2004). Her triumph in Paris marked an incredible season, with nine wins in nine races.
Hodgkinson was considered the favorite to continue her winning streak at the Diamond League finals in Brussels in September. However, her focus will now shift to recovery and preparation for the World Championships in Tokyo in 2025, where she aims to win her first world title.
Despite the early end to her season, Hodgkinson has undoubtedly solidified her position as one of the world’s leading 800m runners. Her impressive performances this year have set the stage for a promising future, with her sights firmly set on conquering the world stage in Tokyo.
