Om Birla, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, was re-elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday. The decision came after the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition INDIA bloc were unable to agree on a candidate for the position. Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved the motion for Birla’s election, which was approved through voice votes.
In his acceptance speech, Birla condemned the Congress government’s decision to impose Emergency in 1975, praising those who resisted it and protected Indian democracy. He also expressed a hope for a parliament that encourages debate but avoids disruptions.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Birla on his re-election, highlighting his contributions during his previous term and expressing confidence in his ability to guide parliamentarians and fulfill people’s expectations. Modi praised Birla’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and productive parliament, emphasizing the importance of listening to all voices.
The INDIA bloc, while congratulating Birla, expressed concerns about fair representation and the potential for disruptions. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that while the government holds political power, the opposition represents the voice of the Indian people. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the opposition’s voice is heard and that cooperation is built on trust.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for impartiality and equal opportunities for both the opposition and the ruling party. He expressed hope that Birla would uphold the principles of fairness and ensure that no member’s voice is stifled.
The re-election of Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker sets the stage for the 18th Lok Sabha, with the INDIA bloc hoping for a more inclusive and respectful parliamentary environment. Birla, in his speech, pledged to uphold the high standards of parliamentary tradition and work towards policies that benefit the most vulnerable sections of society.
