Oman Aims to Become a Global Hub for Low-Carbon Marine Fuel

Oman is setting its sights on becoming a global leader in low-carbon fuels for the shipping industry. Asyad Group, in partnership with OQ Alternative Energy and Sumitomo Corporation Middle East, has announced a joint study agreement to explore this ambitious vision. The initiative represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable maritime practices and fulfilling global decarbonization goals.

This collaboration leverages Oman’s unique geographic advantages and vast renewable energy resources to create a competitive market for low-carbon fuels. The project has already sent out a request for information (RFI) to major shipping companies worldwide, seeking their input on the adoption of eco-friendly logistics solutions in Oman. A feasibility study is also underway to assess key factors such as the levelized cost of delivered low-carbon fuels, the required infrastructure, and alignment with global regulatory standards for sustainable fuels.

Early findings suggest that Oman is well-positioned to become a leading supplier of low-carbon fuels for the global shipping industry. The insights gleaned from the RFI will be crucial in guiding the development of a world-class low-carbon bunkering infrastructure in Oman, ultimately impacting global maritime practices.

This ambitious project aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040 and its sustainable energy strategy. The partners plan to leverage the Sultanate’s abundant renewable resources to provide low-carbon fuels, including e-methanol and ammonia, at competitive prices. Current bunkering facilities at the ports of Salalah and Duqm are identified as strategic sites for potential upgrades to support low-carbon fuel operations. By modernizing these existing infrastructures and transforming these ports into key nodes on vital global trade routes, Oman aims to become a leader in the global transition towards low-carbon fuels for maritime transport and further bolster the growth of the country’s flourishing logistics sector.

This collaboration signifies a proactive and innovative approach to addressing the pressing need for sustainable solutions in the shipping industry. Oman’s commitment to this vision is expected to make a significant contribution to global decarbonization efforts and reshape the future of maritime transportation.
