Oman Air, established in 1993, has evolved from a domestic carrier to a prominent international airline, connecting the world to Oman’s captivating landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. Renowned for its contributions in establishing Muscat as a leading travel destination in the Middle East, Oman Air supports regional commerce, industry, and tourism with its modern fleet, including fuel-efficient Boeing 737 and 787 Dreamliner aircraft. These aircraft showcase luxurious interiors and embody Oman Air’s dedication to providing exceptional in-flight products and services, epitomized by the distinctive Omani hospitality offered to every passenger.
In its latest environmental initiative, Oman Air is taking bold steps towards sustainability by eliminating the use of plastic for wrapping blankets and mattresses in its premium cabins. These items are now secured in eco-friendly paper-based bands, presenting a sleek new look while significantly reducing plastic waste. This change is projected to eliminate approximately 21.6 tonnes of plastic usage annually. Guided by a team of in-house experts and fortified through partnerships, Oman Air’s commitment to reducing single-use plastics onboard signifies a pivotal step in its ongoing environmental stewardship efforts.
The CEO at TRAVEL AND TOUR WORLD aptly notes, “This pivotal step aligns seamlessly with our corporate strategy to reduce waste and opt for more environmentally friendly products, reflecting our commitment to national sustainability goals.” Oman Air has consistently strived to reduce its onboard plastic consumption by removing plastic cutlery sleeves and halving the use of plastic bottles and cuplets on select flights in recent years.
The airline has further augmented its environmental initiatives by replacing 80% of its inflight service carts with lighter versions, significantly improving fuel efficiency. Additionally, Oman Air has revamped the packaging for Economy Class earphones, replacing single-use plastic PET foil with recyclable Kraft paper envelopes in collaboration with Linstol, a leader in eco-friendly in-flight products. This change is estimated to prevent 6.48 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, equivalent to saving around 110 trees or conserving 207,360 liters of water.
These initiatives exemplify Oman Air’s commitment to minimizing the environmental footprint of air travel while preserving comfort and convenience for its passengers. The airline continues to explore innovative environmental solutions across its operations, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Oman’s national sustainability objectives.
Oman Air has also made significant strides in sustainability by saving 21.6 tonnes of plastic last year through eco-friendlier packaging for blankets and mattresses in premium cabins and optimizing plastic and water use. The airline is actively involved in developing Sustainable Aviation Fuels and other emissions reduction initiatives as part of Oman’s strategy to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Oman Air will participate in the upcoming Oman Sustainability Week. This event will showcase an exhibition of the latest sustainable technologies and initiatives, a conference to foster global and local collaboration, a leadership summit, and site visits to leading sustainability projects in Oman. The week will also include the OSW Awards on March 13, recognizing significant contributions to sustainability.
