The inaugural ‘Oman DownWinder’ event, spearheaded by the Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN Group), concluded triumphantly at the historic Ras Al Hadd castle. This eight-day expedition, spanning 500 kilometers across the sea, served as a pivotal component of a strategic initiative aimed at diversifying tourism and enhancing Oman’s reputation in adventure and experiential travel within the framework of Vision 2040. The event transcended a mere showcase of endurance, embodying OMRAN Group’s commitment to developing eco-friendly and sustainable adventure experiences.
Twelve professional athletes, hailing from both Oman and the international arena, participated in the event, traversing Oman’s breathtaking landscapes, thereby promoting it as an emerging hub for sports tourism and events. The culmination of this exhilarating adventure was marked by a ceremony in Ras Al Hadd, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, graced by the esteemed presence of His Excellency Dr. Yahya bin Badr bin Malik Al-Maawali, the Governor of South Al Sharqiyah. Distinguished guests included Dr. Hashil bin Obaid Al Mahrouqi, CEO of OMRAN Group, and Dr. Khamis bin Salim Al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail, along with prominent local sheikhs and officials.
Throughout their arduous journey, participants illuminated major tourist attractions along the coast, solidifying Oman’s reputation as a premier kitesurfing destination. They reveled in unique experiences at locales such as the Sugar dunes in Khalouf, Masirah Island, and Ashkara, before reaching the renowned Ras Al Jinz Reserve. The adventure provided a comprehensive exploration of Oman’s coastal beauty, particularly captivating due to the favorable weather conditions prevailing during this period.
At each of the seven journey stops, ranging in distance from 52km to 115km, exhibition races were held to demonstrate the potential for both short sprint and long marathon windsurfing events along the coast. Exceptional weather conditions throughout facilitated optimal speeds and challenging wave interactions, with each leg concluding in restful pauses where participants immersed themselves in Oman’s renowned hospitality.
