Omar Abdullah Condemns Killing of Non-Local Labourer in Jammu and Kashmir

In a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, a non-local labourer was found dead in Shopian district on Friday, October 18. The victim, identified as Ashok Chauhan from Bihar, was found with bullet wounds, indicating a possible terrorist attack. This incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressing deep sorrow and urging for the strongest possible action against those responsible.

Abdullah, who took oath as the Chief Minister just two days prior to the incident, swiftly responded to the tragedy. “Very sorry to hear about the death of Ashok Chouhan at the hands of militants in South Kashmir. These attacks are abhorrent & must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. I send my condolences to the family & loved ones of the deceased,” he stated on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

The deceased, who worked as a corn vendor in the area, was reportedly shot twice. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, seeking to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The killing of the non-local labourer comes at a crucial juncture, as the newly formed Jammu and Kashmir government under Omar Abdullah grapples with the task of restoring peace and security in the region. In his first cabinet meeting, held on Thursday, the government passed a resolution urging the Centre to restore statehood to the Union Territory. Abdullah is also expected to travel to Delhi to personally hand over the resolution to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This incident underscores the persistent security challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir, particularly targeting non-locals. The government’s commitment to addressing these challenges and ensuring the safety of all citizens will be closely watched as the new administration navigates this complex landscape.
