The ONEXGPU 2, an external GPU equipped with AMD’s latest Radeon RX 7800M mobile graphics card, has showcased impressive performance in benchmark tests. One-Netbook, a company known for mini-PCs and gaming handhelds, released benchmark results for the ONEXGPU 2 paired with an AMD Ryzen 8840U system, demonstrating the potential of the new GPU.
The benchmark used was the Time Spy test, a widely recognized synthetic benchmark within the 3D Mark suite. The Radeon RX 7800M achieved a remarkable score of 15,806, just 1,200 points lower than the more powerful Radeon RX 7900M. This places its performance slightly ahead or on par with the desktop Radeon RX 7700 XT, a GPU comparable to the one expected in the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro.
According to Tom’s Hardware, this score surpasses what can be achieved with the GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, landing between that and the higher-end GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU. However, it’s crucial to remember that AMD’s Radeon graphics hardware often performs well in synthetic benchmarks like Time Spy and FireStrike, and these scores may not fully reflect actual in-game performance.
The Radeon RX 7800M boasts 12GB of GDDR6 memory and utilizes the RDNA 3 Navi 32 chip, known for excelling in 1080p and 1440p gaming when considering desktop variants. This makes its benchmark performance particularly impressive. It’s also important to note that the PS5 Pro will feature new ray-tracing technology not present in the Radeon RX 7800M, potentially giving the console an edge in ray-tracing-heavy games.
While the Radeon RX 7800M is only available in the ONEXGPU 2, which is not yet available for direct purchase, individuals can express interest through the eGPU’s Indiegogo campaign page. There’s hope that this powerful GPU will eventually make its way into laptops, offering a potentially more affordable gaming option for those considering GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU systems.
