Ontario Energy Association Honors Industry Leaders at Annual Gala

The Ontario Energy Association (OEA) hosted its annual Ontario Energy Conference Gala on September 23, 2024, to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of Ontario’s dynamic energy sector over the past year. The evening was filled with excitement as the OEA presented awards to individuals and companies that have made significant contributions to the industry.

OEA Outstanding Employee Award:

Jennifer Jayapalan, Vice President of Market Operations at Workbench Energy, was honored with the OEA Outstanding Employee Award for her exceptional contributions to the energy industry. Jennifer has been instrumental in facilitating better engagement of IESO market participants in Ontario’s energy markets and in integrating energy storage into the market. Her dedication and expertise have significantly impacted the sector’s progress.

OEA Customer Service Award:

Alectra’s Customer Assistance Programs Team took home the OEA Customer Service Award for their unwavering commitment to serving their customers, particularly in ensuring energy affordability. The team’s tireless efforts have made a real difference in the lives of vulnerable customers. They have distributed over $1.3 million in LEAP funding, sourced additional funds from other agencies, provided one-on-one affordability education, and expanded access to provincial affordability programs. Alectra’s innovative Customer Matching Program has been instrumental in reducing disconnection risks and improving arrears repayment.

OEA Contributor Award:

Andrew Sasso, of Toronto Hydro, was presented with the Contributor Award for his invaluable contributions to the energy industry through leadership, innovation, and collaboration. Andrew’s insightful suggestions and thoughtful contributions have significantly impacted the work of the OEA and the broader energy sector. His deep understanding and unwavering commitment to the industry are truly commendable.

OEA Innovation Award:

Enbridge’s groundbreaking Enhanced Distribution Integrity Management Program was recognized with the OEA Innovation Award. This program has significantly improved safety and reliability by expanding advanced risk analysis from transmission pipelines to critical, high-risk distribution pipelines. The program’s comprehensive assessment of 30,000 km of assets has identified high-risk areas at an unprecedented scale, showcasing Enbridge’s commitment to safety and innovation.

OEA Company Award:

Hydro One was named the OEA Company of the Year for its exceptional performance and leadership in the energy industry. Hydro One is a top-tier utility playing a key role in enabling electrification in Ontario, attracting foreign investors and driving economic growth. The company is expanding to meet this increasing demand through partnerships with Indigenous communities, employing a 50/50 equity model for new transmission lines. Their commitment to serving customers and all Ontarians sets them apart as a leader in the industry.

OEA Leader Award:

Brian Bentz, CEO of Alectra, was recognized as the OEA Leader of the Year for his strong strategic leadership and dedication to guiding his team toward a shared vision. OEA Lifetime Achievement Award:

Malini Giridhar, Vice President of Business Development & Regulatory for Enbridge Gas Inc., and Anthony Haines were both honored with the OEA Lifetime Achievement Award for their long-standing contributions and dedication to the energy industry. Malini’s 30-year career has been marked by her inspiring leadership, her commitment to diversity and inclusion, and her dedication to advancing energy evolution. Anthony’s career spanning over four decades has been characterized by his commitment to excellence, his unwavering support for his teams, and his dedication to shaping the sector’s policy frameworks and business practices. Both Malini and Anthony have left an enduring mark on the energy industry and have served as role models for future generations of energy leaders.
