Ontario International Airport (ONT), situated in Southern California, is set to receive a substantial $4 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to bolster its infrastructure. This funding is part of the FAA’s 2024 Airport Improvement Program, which saw a nationwide disbursement of $636 million to various airports across the United States.
ONT’s allocation of $4,090,060 will be directed towards essential upgrades to its runways and taxiways, ensuring the airport’s continued efficiency and safety. Atif Elkadi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario International Airport Authority, expressed gratitude for the FAA’s support and the collaboration of Congressional leaders. He emphasized the commitment to creating the safest possible environment for travelers and airlines.
This investment comes at a time of remarkable growth for ONT. The airport is experiencing record passenger numbers, projected to surpass 7 million this year, marking a 75% increase since its return to local control in 2016. ONT is also recognized as one of the top 10 cargo airports in the U.S., solidifying its position as a vital transportation hub in one of America’s most dynamic economic regions.
The FAA’s Airport Improvement Program is designed to support a wide range of initiatives at airports nationwide. These include airport planning, enhancing safety measures, developing crucial infrastructure, and addressing noise compatibility concerns. Shannetta R. Griffin, FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, highlighted the significance of this investment in sustaining and improving airport infrastructure, ultimately contributing to the development of the world’s safest and most efficient airport system.
The Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), established in 2012 through a joint effort of the City of Ontario and the County of San Bernardino, is responsible for managing, operating, developing, and promoting ONT. The OIAA’s mission is to support the economic growth of Southern California and serve the population of the airport’s four-county service area. The recent grant from the FAA is a testament to the airport’s commitment to continuous improvement and its vital role in the region’s transportation network.
