American Reilly Opelka, making his return to the ATP Tour after a lengthy absence due to hip and wrist surgery, has booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Newport Championships. Opelka, playing his first tournament in nearly two years, defeated defending champion Adrian Mannarino in a hard-fought three-set encounter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
The 26-year-old American, who received a wild card entry into the tournament, unleashed 19 aces, further cementing his reputation as a powerful server. This victory also marked Opelka’s fourth win against the Frenchman.
Opelka, who was ranked a career-high 17th in the world before his injury, last competed on the ATP Tour at the Washington Open in 2022. He began his Newport campaign with a three-set victory over Constant Lestienne of France.
In his first-ever quarterfinal appearance at Newport, Opelka will face another American, Mackenzie McDonald. McDonald secured his place in the last eight after a straight-sets victory over Britain’s Billy Harris, winning 6-3, 6-4.
