Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, stormed into the Wimbledon 2024 quarterfinals on Monday with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yulia Putintseva. The Latvian star, seeded 13th, displayed her characteristic aggressive style, breaking Putintseva five times throughout the match. Ostapenko’s powerful groundstrokes and confident play were on full display, as she tallied 29 winners against 26 unforced errors.
“This is one of my favorites on the tour,” Ostapenko said after the match. “I won it at juniors (in 2014) and I have great memories here. “I feel like I’m playing really good players but I’m good in deciding moments. I think that’s the key and I’m doing pretty okay,” she added.
Ostapenko’s victory was made even more impressive considering her opponent’s recent upset of world number one Iga Swiatek in the Round of 32. The 27-year-old Latvian, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2018, will now face the winner of the match between US 11th seed Danielle Collins and Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova.
Ostapenko’s aggressive style and ability to perform under pressure have made her a dangerous opponent at Wimbledon. Her next match promises to be a thrilling encounter as she continues her quest for a second Grand Slam title.
