The vibrant celebration of Dahi Handi in Mumbai, commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna, was marred by injuries to over 40 Govindas, participants who form the multi-tiered human pyramids. These injuries occurred while the Govindas attempted to break the ‘Dahi Handi,’ a pot filled with curd and butter, suspended in mid-air. This tradition symbolizes Lord Krishna’s playful and innocent nature.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials reported that eight Govindas were admitted to different hospitals, while 26 were treated at outpatient departments (OPDs). Seven others received treatment and were discharged.
Among the hospitals treating the injured were St. George Hospital, GT Hospital, Poddar Hospital, KEM Hospital, Nair Hospital, Sion Hospital, Rajawadi Hospital, MT Agrawal Hospital, Kurla Bhabha Hospital, Shatabdi Govandi Hospital, Bandra Bhabha Hospital, BDBA Hospital, Trauma Care Hospital, and VN Desai Hospital.
The BMC officials assured that they are working diligently to provide necessary medical care to all injured Govindas.
Meanwhile, intermittent light to moderate showers have been experienced in Mumbai and its suburbs, leading to a decrease in temperatures. Despite the showers, several prominent Govinda groups attempted to form nine-tier human pyramids at various locations in the city.
The Govindas, adorned in colorful attire, traversed the city in trucks, tempos, buses, and two-wheelers to break the Dahi-Handis.
In response to the festivities, Mumbai Police have significantly enhanced security measures in the city. More than 11,000 personnel were deployed to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the public. Deputy police commissioners of zones, additional police commissioners of regions, along with constabulary and inspector-level officials from police stations, were assigned to supervise and enforce the security arrangements.
