The Pacific Coast Arena League (PCAL) is gearing up for its thirteenth season in 2024, following a successful season highlighted by numerous arena polo tournaments under the United States Polo Association held throughout California. Arena polo, also known as hockey on horseback, is a ball and mallet sport played on the back of a horse in an enclosed arena. Two goal mouths are set up at either end of the 300 by 150-foot dirt or sand arena, and teams of three players, all mounted on horseback, compete against each other. Using bamboo cane mallets, the players maneuver the ball, attempting to score goals in their opponents’ nets. Game play consists of 7.5-minute periods called “chukkers,” with four chukkers making up a single game. The team with the highest score at the end of the game is declared the winner. Safety is paramount in arena polo, and teams must adhere to strict rules to ensure the well-being of both players and horses. Open to men and women of all ages, arena polo fosters a competitive yet inclusive environment where individuals can challenge themselves and work together to achieve success. The 2024 PCAL season will culminate in the prestigious National Arena Chairman’s Cup, promising an exciting conclusion to the league’s thirteenth season.
