Pakistan Cricket Legend Bismah Maroof Announces Retirement

In a shocking turn of events, Bismah Maroof, one of Pakistan’s most prominent women cricketers and former captain, has announced her immediate retirement from international cricket. The 32-year-old was forced to take an extended break from cricket due to fitness issues in 2020 and the birth of her daughter in 2021. Despite these challenges, Maroof remained a vital player for Pakistan, making waves when she brought her baby to the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand. As the first Pakistani woman cricketer to utilize the 12-month maternity leave with pay policy, Maroof set a remarkable precedent. Her 276 international appearances, the most by any Pakistani woman cricketer, include 6,262 runs and 80 wickets. Maroof made her ODI debut against India in 2006 and her T20I debut against Ireland in 2009. She has been a stalwart of Pakistan’s batting lineup, known for her left-handed elegance and consistent performance. Expressing her decision, Maroof stated, “I have decided to retire from the game I love the most. It has been an incredible journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and memories that I will cherish forever.” She extended her gratitude to her family, the Pakistan Cricket Board, and her fans for their unwavering support throughout her career. The head of Pakistan’s women’s cricket wing, Tania Mallik, acknowledged Maroof’s immense contributions to the team. Maroof was instrumental in Pakistan’s two gold medals at the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014 and captained her country in 96 international matches. She represented Pakistan in four ICC Women’s 50-over World Cups and eight ICC Women’s T20 World Cups, leading the side in the 2020 and 2023 editions of the T20 World Cup. Maroof’s retirement leaves a significant void in Pakistan’s women’s cricket team. Her experience, leadership, and talent will be deeply missed. However, her legacy as a trailblazer for women in sports will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of cricketers.
