Pakistan Shifts Second Bangladesh Test to Rawalpindi Due to Karachi Stadium Renovation

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made a significant change to the schedule of the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. Due to the ongoing renovation of the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, the second Test match will now be played in Rawalpindi. This decision means that both matches of the series will be hosted in Rawalpindi, with the first Test commencing on Wednesday. The second Test is scheduled to begin on August 30th.

The stadium in Karachi is undergoing extensive renovations to prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan will host in February 2025. Initially, the PCB had planned to hold the second Test in Karachi without spectators. However, after consulting with construction experts, the PCB determined that the ongoing renovation work would create significant noise pollution, potentially disrupting the players’ focus and performance. Additionally, the dust generated by the construction could pose health risks to the players, officials, broadcasters, and media personnel.

The PCB expressed its commitment to ensuring the completion of the renovations in time for the Champions Trophy and stated that it did not want to hinder the progress of the work. To this end, they have shifted the second Test to Rawalpindi, ensuring that the Karachi stadium can be fully prepared for the international tournament. The PCB has also emphasized that they consulted with all relevant stakeholders, including the Bangladesh Cricket Board, before making the decision to change the venue.

While the renovations in Karachi continue, the PCB has also confirmed that the city is still scheduled to host one of the three Test matches against England in October. However, the board is committed to working closely with architects and construction experts to ensure the safety and security of the England Test match, keeping the England and Wales Cricket Board informed of the progress. The PCB has stated that it will continue to assess the situation and provide updates as needed.
