In a shocking turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended its national junior championship, throwing the future of young cricketers into uncertainty. The tournament, which began on Tuesday with three-day matches across various venues, was abruptly halted after the first day’s play.
The PCB, in a concise press release, attributed the postponement to ‘unavoidable circumstances’ without elaborating further. This decision, however, has left players and officials bewildered, especially considering the significant investment made by the board in preparing the 18 participating regional teams.
Sources within the PCB revealed that the indefinite postponement stems from a surge in complaints regarding irregularities in team selection and concerns about over-age players using fraudulent documentation. Despite rigorous processes involving wrist bone X-rays and strict documentation requirements, allegations of misconduct in player selection and age manipulation persist in the U-19 tournaments.
The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, reportedly received numerous complaints regarding selection processes, some of which were verified. This prompted the decision to halt the tournament, which is seen as the cornerstone for nurturing future cricketing talent and providing international exposure.
The board had invested substantial resources in preparing the teams, including training camps, meals, accommodation, transportation, kits, and daily allowances. Teams were scheduled to play a one-day match after a day’s break following the conclusion of the three-day matches.
The selection process was managed by regional coaches appointed by the PCB, with a selection panel including a board representative and the president of the respective region. Notably, the PCB has also postponed the national women’s U-19 tournament, scheduled to begin on September 16th.
This unexpected suspension raises serious concerns about the PCB’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and integrity in its youth development programs.
