Pallikaranai Woman Ends Life After Husband’s Honor Killing
A 22-year-old woman, Sharmila, has ended her life in Pallikaranai, months after her husband Praveen was murdered in an honor killing. Sharmila had married Praveen, a Dalit mechanic, against her parents’ wishes due to caste differences. After Praveen was murdered by Sharmila’s brother and his associates, she demanded the arrest of her parents and brother but her request was not met.
On April 14, Sharmila attempted to end her life but was admitted to a private hospital in Pallikaranai and later referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Unfortunately, she died on Monday night without responding to treatment.
Praveen’s mother, G. Chitra, alleged in a written complaint to the Tambaram Police Commissioner that her daughter-in-law attempted to end her life because the police failed to add her parents’ and elder brother’s names to the charge sheet. She also alleged that the police were supporting Sharmila’s family, causing her great distress. However, the police have denied the allegations.
The Pallikaranai police have registered a case over Sharmila’s death and a probe is on. This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of honor killings and caste discrimination in our society. It is crucial to raise awareness about these issues and work towards creating a more just and equitable society where all individuals have the right to love and live freely without fear of violence or discrimination.
