Parents Prioritize Home Time During Summer Holidays Despite Social Media Pressure

Despite the pressure to plan action-packed summer adventures fueled by social media, a recent poll of 1,000 parents with school-age children reveals a strong preference for spending quality time at home during the holidays. While the allure of day trips exists, the reality of summer outings often comes with annoyances like greedy seagulls, sandy sandwiches, and pesky wasps, leading 32% of parents to prioritize home relaxation.

The poll, conducted by DFS, highlights the positive aspects of staying home. An impressive 79% of parents view this time as an opportunity to reconnect with their kids after a busy school year, fostering stronger family bonds. Parents also appreciate the benefits of a stress-free day, with 33% citing it as a major advantage of staying home. Additionally, 45% claim that some of their favorite days are spent with their kids in the comfort of their own home, engaging in activities like baking, watching TV, playing board games, or solving puzzles.

Interestingly, 42% of parents believe their children prefer staying home during school holidays, likely due to the lack of a set schedule and the availability of personal items like tablets and gaming consoles. While nearly one in five parents (18%) find their children unwinding in their bedrooms, 17% observe them playing in the garden, demonstrating the various ways children enjoy their time at home.

Beyond the benefits of bonding and relaxation, parents recognize the educational value of home-based activities. A significant 76% believe that spending time at home fosters their child’s creativity and imagination. Moreover, 58% prioritize educational activities, further emphasizing the importance of enriching experiences during the summer break.

The poll also sheds light on the challenges faced by working parents during the summer holidays. While a quarter engage their children in organized activities multiple times a week, nearly half find juggling work and keeping the kids entertained a demanding task. This underscores the need for a balance between structured activities and the benefits of relaxing and enjoying family time at home.

Ultimately, the poll emphasizes the value of prioritizing family time, whether it involves exploring the world or embracing the comfort of home. As the DFS spokesperson aptly puts it, “While there are lots of great activities children can take part in, staying at home offers numerous benefits, from cost savings and comfort to personal growth and quality family time. It provides a chance to relax, pursue personal interests, and enjoy the local community, all while avoiding the stress and expenses associated with travel.”
