The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are on track for record-breaking ticket sales, with over 2.1 million tickets already sold, leaving just 500,000 remaining and an additional 300,000 in reserve. This surge in interest comes as the Paralympic movement continues to grow in popularity worldwide, following the remarkable boost it received after the London 2012 Games.
Organizers say that the demand for tickets has been overwhelming, with venues like the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, and the Velodrome nearing capacity. The Chateau de Versailles, where the para equestrian competitions will be held, has even had to increase its capacity to accommodate the high demand.
Despite the positive sales figures, organizers are mindful of the need for a lasting impact beyond the Games. “We want to be relevant to the media not just every four years,” stated International Paralympic Committee (IPC) spokesperson Craig Spence. “It’s crucial to build a journey and engage people in the world championships in our sports in-between the Games and continue to tell these stories.”
Spence also emphasized the importance of building momentum in the years leading up to the Games, highlighting the high level of media interest already being generated. “Last Thursday, we had over 600 media inquiries – in London, we had 100 a day. That’s just the level of interest we’re seeing in the Games,” Spence noted.
One notable statistic is the proportion of tickets being sold outside of France. Paris 2024 figures indicate that 8% of tickets have been purchased abroad, exceeding the typical range of 3-5%. This signifies the global appeal of the Paralympics and the growing international community interested in supporting these athletes.
