Paris Hilton, known for her reality television appearances and entrepreneurial ventures, has taken on a new role as producer for a hard-hitting docuseries. The series, based on Sarah Ditum’s book ‘Toxic: Women, Fame, and the Tabloid 2000s,’ examines the ‘sexist, exploitative culture’ that left a profound impact on nine well-known women between 2000 and 2010. Hilton, who was personally affected by the tabloid industry’s predatory practices, acquired the rights to Ditum’s book and envisions the documentary series as a platform for women to reclaim their narratives and expose the dark underbelly of tabloid culture.
The book delves into the prevalence of ‘revenge porn’ during the ‘wild west’ era of the early 2000s, a topic that Hilton is intimately familiar with. Her personal experience with the release of her 2001 sex tape, ‘1 Night in Paris,’ by her ex-boyfriend, Rick Salomon, is well-documented. The docuseries will also feature Kim Kardashian, Hilton’s former assistant, whose 2007 sex tape, ‘Superstar,’ was handled in a starkly different manner, highlighting the complexities and double standards of the media landscape at the time.
Hilton’s decision to produce this docuseries stems from her desire to provide a platform for women who have faced similar experiences of exploitation and public scrutiny. She believes that by sharing their stories, these women can reclaim their agency and challenge the harmful narratives that have been perpetuated about them.
