Parkland Powerlifters Repeat as National Champions

Parkland’s powerlifting team, despite performing in a secluded weight room away from the spotlight, has found glory through personal accomplishments. The program’s emphasis goes beyond championships, aiming to instill life skills through discipline and dedication, as stated by coach Erik Steiner. Over the weekend, the Trojans experienced an unparalleled triumph at the Powerlifting America event in New Orleans, repeating as national champions in the varsity division. Their journey to this victory was marked by a deep understanding of their own abilities and a focus on their personal progress.

Although they were not the hometown team this year, they faced the formidable competition from across the nation, including 91 teams with over 400 lifters. The event was spread over the weekend, providing the Parkland team with opportunities to showcase their talent. Steiner acknowledged that he had no expectations for the meet but was thrilled that his team could display their abilities on a national stage.

Maddox Rampen emerged as the JV champion in the 74 kg class and the overall best JV lifter. Ryan Marra and Noah Holecz secured varsity titles in the 120 kg and 120+ kg classes, respectively. Casey Schreiner clinched the JV championship in the 83 kg class. Other members contributed to the team’s overall success, including Satoshi Rosenblum (fifth in the varsity 59 kg class), Kyle Steiner (sixth in the varsity 74 kg class), Sawyer Unger (sixth in the varsity 83 kg class), and Jocelyn Romero-Billowich (second in the varsity 84 kg class). Steiner emphasized that the program is not just about winning but also about imparting valuable life skills.

The athletes themselves echoed Steiner’s sentiments, expressing that the strong bonds formed within the team are a significant aspect of their experience. For them, the support and camaraderie they share are more important than external recognition. This triumph has brought a sense of fulfillment and pride to the team members. They are eager to continue their journey of self-improvement, aiming to surpass their previous accomplishments and represent Parkland with distinction.
