A tense situation unfolded at Chennai airport on Thursday morning when a passenger was apprehended for carrying bullet shells. The incident occurred minutes before the passenger was scheduled to board a flight to New Delhi. During routine security checks, 8mm bullet shells were discovered in the shaving kit of a 45-year-old passenger from Uttar Pradesh. Security personnel, mistaking the shells for live rounds, detained the passenger and immediately cancelled his flight ticket.
The incident caused a delay in the flight to Delhi, which was initially scheduled to depart at 6:00 am but was delayed until 6:20 am. The bullet shells were examined and confirmed to be empty. Upon questioning, the passenger informed security personnel that he had visited Chennai for his son’s college admission and was returning to Uttar Pradesh. He admitted that the bag belonged to his brother, an Indian Army personnel, and that he was unaware of the bullet shells inside.
The passenger was subsequently handed over to airport police for further investigation. After questioning, he was released after providing an undertaking that he would not carry such items in the future. The incident caused significant panic at the airport, which is currently under heightened seven-tier security measures until August 20 in anticipation of Independence Day celebrations.
