Jewish Communities Worldwide Celebrate Passover Amidst Challenges
As Jewish communities worldwide celebrated Passover, this year’s observance took on a different meaning in the face of continued challenges.
Captives in Gaza
The ongoing captivity of 133 hostages in Gaza loomed over festivities. In Barcelona, the Jewish community set up an empty table in their synagogue, representing the absence of the captives. In the Netherlands, the community prayed for their safety and collected donations for soldiers fighting in the conflict.
Response to Iran’s Attacks
The threat posed by Iran cast a shadow over celebrations. In Rome, the Jewish community held an explanatory evening to discuss Hamas’s crimes and pledged their support for Israel. In Bulgaria, a public Passover festival was canceled, and communities encouraged private observance.
Call for Unity and Solidarity
The Conference of European Rabbis emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity during these trying times. Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt encouraged communities to preserve the memory of the holidays despite adversity and to pray for the return of the captives.
Observing Freedom with Greater Strength
Despite the challenges, Jewish communities reaffirmed their commitment to celebrating freedom. Rabbi Samuel Di Segni of Rome expressed the shared fate with Israel and the determination to support them economically. Rabbi Eliyahu Hamra of Argentina emphasized the need for prayer and unity during Iran’s attacks.
