Pastor Corey Brooks, founder of Project H.O.O.D. (Helping Others Obtain Destiny), paints a stark picture of the struggles facing his South Side Chicago community. While he dedicates his life to serving his neighbors, a recent influx of migrants, primarily from Venezuela, has brought a new wave of challenges.
Brooks, who has gained national recognition for his rooftop vigils aimed at transforming Chicago’s notorious ‘O-Block’ into #OpportunityBlock, is deeply concerned about the impact on his community. He fears that the sudden influx will strain already limited resources, potentially leading to gentrification and exacerbating poverty and violence.
‘We were literally dropped into this situation without warning or preparation,’ Brooks says, highlighting the lack of support for his community. ‘We are met with silence instead of real solutions or guidance.’
Brooks points a finger at both sides of the political spectrum. He criticizes Democrats for what he sees as an exploitation of the Black community, labeling anyone who votes against them as a ‘race traitor.’ He also criticizes the lack of action from conservatives, accusing them of being more focused on online debates and distractions than tackling real issues.
‘It’s easy to criticize from afar, but it takes real skill and empathy to actually help people in a meaningful way — to guide them in building better futures for themselves,’ Brooks asserts.
Despite the challenges, Brooks remains steadfast in his commitment to his community. He is spearheading the construction of a $40 million Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center aimed at uplifting the South Side. But even his efforts are hampered by the overwhelming influx of migrants and a lack of national attention.
‘We don’t have to be a nation consumed by absurdities,’ Brooks urges. ‘We can be a nation that thrives in greatness.’ He calls for a renewed focus on building up communities and addressing real issues, rather than getting lost in online distractions and political posturing.
Brooks’ story is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by communities across the country. It highlights the need for real solutions and a commitment to building a better future for all Americans.
