Path of Exile Players Warned to Change Passwords After Phishing Attempt

Path of Exile Players Urged to Change Passwords After Phishing Attempt

Grinding Gear Games, the developer of the popular action RPG Path of Exile, has issued a warning to players after a malicious news post containing a phishing link briefly appeared on the game’s Steam page.

According to the studio, the post was taken down quickly, but players who followed the link or suspect their account may have been compromised are advised to take immediate action to secure their accounts by changing their password and enabling multifactor authentication (MFA).

Phishing is a common form of online fraud that uses deceptive emails or websites to trick people into revealing sensitive information or installing malware. In this case, the phishing link reportedly led to a fake registration page for a Path of Exile 2 beta test, according to Steam user Keijokainen.

The scam site was reportedly well-disguised, making it difficult to distinguish from the legitimate Path of Exile website. The phishing attempt has raised concerns about the effectiveness of Steam’s MFA protection, as the login credentials could potentially be used in the standalone Path of Exile launcher if it has been set up to work independently of Steam.

Grinding Gear Games advises players to remain vigilant and to avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing personal information on untrustworthy websites. If you suspect your account may have been compromised, you should change your password immediately, enable MFA, and contact customer support.
