The New England Patriots have bolstered their tight end depth chart by signing free agent Mitchell Wilcox. The 27-year-old spent the previous four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he contributed in both offensive and special teams roles.
Wilcox, an undrafted free agent out of South Florida, initially joined the Bengals’ practice squad but gradually earned a more prominent role on the active roster. Over the past three seasons alone, he missed only three games in Joe Burrow’s offense and consistently made valuable contributions as a core special teamer.
The Patriots’ tight end room currently consists of Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, and La’Michael Pettway, who are all under contract for the 2024 season. Wilcox’s addition provides the team with an additional option and will likely compete for the third tight end spot. The Patriots now have 71 players under contract, leaving 19 roster spots available. With eight draft picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, the team has the opportunity to further address their roster needs.
