As the 2024 NFL Draft draws near, the New England Patriots’ intentions for their third overall pick remain shrouded in mystery. Former Patriots defensive back and current NBC NFL analyst Devin McCourty shared his perspectives on the team’s current predicament, suggesting that a trade may not necessarily involve solely draft picks as compensation.
McCourty highlighted the Patriots’ roster needs and their potential to improve despite their disappointing 2023 season. He believes that the team should aim for a player with starting potential, such as Minnesota Vikings left tackle Christian Darrisaw, in any hypothetical trade scenario.
The most probable outcome remains that the Patriots will retain their third overall selection without making a trade, in McCourty’s opinion. However, he emphasized that the team must make significant improvements in 2024, aiming for a playoff appearance at the very least.
While McCourty acknowledged the possibility of addressing the wide receiver position through a trade, he ruled out the likelihood of acquiring a player like Justin Jefferson from the Vikings. Instead, he suggested that the Patriots prioritize solidifying their offensive line, particularly at the left tackle position.
The Patriots have a history of making astute draft selections, including McCourty himself, who was picked 27th overall in 2010. In the second round of that draft, New England selected three players: tight end Aaron Hernandez, defensive end Jermaine Cunningham, and cornerback Brandon Spikes, all from the University of Florida.
As the draft approaches, the Patriots will have a multitude of options to consider. Whether they trade up, trade down, or stay put at number three, their decision will shape the future of their franchise.
