Patriots Eye Michigan’s McCarthy as Future Quarterback in Mock Draft

With the 2024 NFL Draft just days away, there has been much speculation about which prospects will be selected by which teams. One of the most intriguing storylines to watch is where Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy will land. In a recent mock draft, NFL.com’s Charles Davis predicts that McCarthy will be selected by the New England Patriots with the third overall pick.

This would be a significant development for the Patriots, who traded former Pro Bowl quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason. The Patriots are now left with a quarterback depth chart that includes Bailey Zappe, Jacoby Brissett, and Nathan Rourke. None of these quarterbacks have proven themselves to be a long-term solution at the position, so the Patriots could certainly use a player like McCarthy.

McCarthy had a breakout season in 2023, leading Michigan to an undefeated season and a Big Ten Championship. He threw for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. He also rushed for 283 yards and four touchdowns. McCarthy’s performance earned him the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year award.

McCarthy is a pro-style quarterback with a strong arm and good accuracy. He is also a good athlete and can make plays with his legs. He would be a good fit for the Patriots’ offense, which is led by a strong running game and a talented receiving corps.

If the Patriots do select McCarthy, he would be the second Michigan quarterback to be drafted by the team in the last 25 years. The Patriots selected Tom Brady with the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. Brady went on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, leading the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles.

It remains to be seen whether McCarthy can have the same kind of success as Brady, but he has the potential to be a very good quarterback in the NFL. The Patriots would be wise to consider selecting him with the third overall pick in the draft.
