ESPN analyst Mina Kimes expressed surprise at the New England Patriots’ low-cost contract extension for pass rusher Josh Uche, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal including $2.3 million guaranteed. Uche reportedly turned down a two-year, $15 million deal with $11 million guaranteed from another team. Kimes stated, “I still can’t believe that Josh Uche contract. Maybe you can explain that to me, I didn’t really – I guess he wants to bet on himself.”
Uche explained his decision, saying, “The Patriots were the organization that gave me a chance in the NFL. It’s like family. It feels like home and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than home. So I think that was my main reason: Loyalty, family and love.”
Despite Uche’s career-high 11.5 sacks in 2022, his production declined in 2023. With star pass rusher Matthew Judon injured, Uche recorded just three sacks. With Judon expected to return, Uche could be poised for a rebound season.
The signing is a low-cost move with potential big rewards for the Patriots, who have needs across their roster. However, Kimes believes the team missed an opportunity to upgrade their offense, noting their need for a playmaker like free agent Calvin Ridley. She also suggested that a trade for a player like 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has been the subject of trade rumors, could address this issue.
