Patten Free Library’s Annual Spelling Bee: A Night of Wordplay and Community

Join the Patten Free Library for an evening of friendly competition and wordplay at its annual spelling bee. Scheduled to take place on May 10th at 5:30 p.m. in the Maine Maritime Museum’s Long Reach Hall, the event will see teams of spellers aged 16 and above battle it out over three rounds of challenging spelling. From tricky words to unexpected twists, teams will race against the clock to claim the title of Champion Spellers.

Audience members are encouraged to come out and support their favorite teams, enjoying the entertainment along with munchies and a cash bar. Tickets for the spelling bee are available for $25 in advance or $30 at the door. High school students can purchase tickets for a discounted price of $5.

Morse High School English teacher Brian Stanton, whose AP English class placed third in the 2023 spelling bee, will emcee the evening’s festivities. Meg Barker, librarian at Fisher Mitchell School and owner of Embark Tours, will serve as the word caller.

In addition to the spelling competition, the Patten Free Library will also be launching its Raffle Basket Fundraiser at the event. The raffle will be held for two weeks in the library’s main lobby, culminating on May 25th. All proceeds from the raffle will directly benefit the Patten Free Library, supporting the enhancement of educational programs, resources, and services for the community. With a wide range of raffle baskets to choose from, there’s sure to be something for everyone.
