Patti Smith Reacts to Her Mention in Taylor Swift’s Album

Legendary singer-songwriter Patti Smith has reciprocated the love from Taylor Swift, who mentioned her in the title track of her latest album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ In the song, Swift humorously pokes fun at herself and a lover, paying homage to both Smith and Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

Smith took to social media to express her appreciation, sharing photos of herself reading Thomas’ collection of short stories, ‘Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog.’ She tagged Swift and broke up the text in a poetic format, saying, ‘This is saying I was moved to be mentioned in the company of the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Thank you Taylor.’

The Hotel Chelsea in New York City, also mentioned in Swift’s song, shared a throwback image of Smith inside her hotel room. Smith had even written a bestselling book about her time at the hotel with artist Robert Mapplethorpe, titled ‘Just Kids.’

Smith and Thomas, who passed away in 1953 at the age of 39, have both resided at the historic Hotel Chelsea, which has played host to countless other literary and artistic figures. In recent years, Smith has performed at Thomas’ old boathouse on Laugharne in Carmarthenshire, United Kingdom.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ has become a chart-topping success. A source told ET that Swift ‘put her heart and soul into the music’ and is eager for her fans to hear it.

The album was a surprise double release and features 31 tracks, including a mix of heartbreak songs and love songs inspired by her relationships with Joe Alwyn, Matty Healy, and Travis Kelce.
