Paul F. Tompkins, a multi-faceted comedian, hosts the recurring variety show ‘Varietopia’ in Los Angeles, which he is now taking on tour for the first time. The show, which began in 2002 at the Largo nightclub, has featured a diverse range of performers, including magicians, musicians, and even Tompkins himself in character. Tompkins, who is also known for his stand-up comedy, voice acting, and podcasting, sees ‘Varietopia’ as a celebration of the classic variety show format and an expression of his diverse creative talents.
Inspired by the eclectic scene at the Largo, where musicians like Aimee Mann and Fiona Apple, comedian Patton Oswalt, and comedy band Tenacious D performed, Tompkins sought to create a show that showcased a variety of talent. He moved ‘Varietopia’ to the Lodge Room, a larger venue that allowed him to expand the lineup with a house band featuring a full horn section.
Over the years, ‘Varietopia’ has featured an ever-changing roster of performers, with past shows including a St. Patrick’s Day performance by Tompkins as ‘Monsignor Damien Fearnley,’ singing an Irish-tinged song about Jesus. Despite the show’s longevity, Tompkins had never toured with it before, citing the logistical challenges of coordinating travel and equipment for a show that incorporates live music.
However, with the help of musical director Jordan Katz, Tompkins has overcome these obstacles and is now bringing ‘Varietopia’ to Boston for two sold-out shows at City Winery on May 2nd. Katz, who has collaborated with Tompkins on the show, praised his comedic brilliance and his ability to showcase his diverse talents through ‘Varietopia.’
Tompkins, who has had a multi-faceted career spanning four decades, sees his diverse work as part of a cohesive creative expression. He believes that each creative project informs the others, as they are all extensions of his creativity and his own unique perspective.
