The 2024 Emmy Awards were a night to remember for the cast of ‘Reservation Dogs,’ particularly for star Paulina Alexis. While the show, nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, didn’t take home any awards, its presence on the red carpet was a powerful statement of representation.
Alexis, who is currently 37 weeks pregnant, embraced the opportunity to showcase her heritage and celebrate her impending motherhood. Working with stylist Amanda Lim, she chose a flowing white Christian Siriano gown that flattered her figure. The real highlight, however, was the custom jewelry by Joe Big Mountain, a Mohawk, Comanche, and Cree quillwork artist. Big Mountain crafted intricate quill earrings, a harness adorned with beads and dentalium shells, and a stunning necklace that wrapped around Alexis’s baby bump.
“I really wanted to incorporate being a soon-to-be mom into my look,” said Alexis. “I didn’t get a plus one to this historical Emmys evening, but I managed to smuggled one in anyway—my son!”
Alexis has made a conscious effort to spotlight Indigenous designers on the red carpet. She has previously worn custom ribbon tops and skirts by Dabney Warren and striking jewelry from Ataumbi Metals. For her, fashion is a powerful tool for representation.
“The one thing about Indigenous jewelry is that every piece tells a story,” she shared. “I have been gifted so many amazing hand-crafted [pieces] from so many talented indigenous artists across Turtle Island.” She highlighted her admiration for other Indigenous designers, including Robin Waynee, Jennifer Younger, and Keri Ataumbi.
The red custom piece by Joe Big Mountain holds a special significance for Alexis. “I love the authenticity of the…red custom piece Joe made for me—smells like real moose hide! Red represents life, unity, and strength, and that’s what my son means to me.”
Alexis’s presence at the Emmys was a testament to the growing visibility of Indigenous voices in Hollywood. By highlighting Indigenous artistry through her fashion choices, she continues to champion representation and inspire future generations.
