In the world of PC components, the power supply often takes a backseat. As long as it boots up your system and doesn’t cause a fire, it’s easy to assume all is well. However, like any component, power supplies have a finite lifespan, and neglecting them can have dire consequences.
A recent post on the Corsair subreddit serves as a cautionary tale. User -Gavin- reported an explosion of their Corsair RX1000x power supply. While the unit was around 13 years old, most power supplies typically carry warranties between five and 10 years. Seasonic’s B12 series has a five-year warranty, while its Prime series extends to 12 years. Corsair Vengeance power supplies have a five-year warranty, and the RMx series boasts a 10-year warranty.
Beyond warranty periods, high-end power supplies generally aren’t expected to last more than 10 years. In the case of the Reddit user, they received three additional years of service. However, it’s crucial to note that attempting repairs on expired power supplies can be extremely dangerous. Capacitors inside can remain charged for hours, posing the risk of high-voltage shocks or even fatalities.
Never open a power supply unless you possess extensive knowledge and experience. This is the only PC component where mishandling can result in severe injury. The extended warranties offered on power supplies reflect their importance.
If you have a decent power supply, there’s no need to worry about it exploding spontaneously. However, it’s advisable to upgrade your power supply whenever you make significant PC upgrades and the warranty is nearing its end.
A simple gut check can also be helpful. If your power supply has been in use for a decade and has gone through multiple builds, it’s likely time for a replacement. Ignoring your power supply can lead to damage to other components.
When replacing your power supply, don’t simply throw it away. Take it to an e-waste recycling center for proper disposal. Power supplies can hold a charge for an extended period, and you don’t want to risk harm to waste management personnel.
Power supplies work until they don’t, and a malfunctioning power supply can cause significant headaches. Keep in mind the lifespan of your power supply and upgrade it regularly. Most importantly, never attempt to repair it yourself.
