Pennsylvania 2024 Primary Election Concludes Smoothly; Key Races Highlight Lehigh Valley Ballots

Polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Pennsylvania’s 2024 primary election, concluding a day of voting that featured several high-profile races for both Democrats and Republicans in the Lehigh Valley. Leading up to the election, Northampton County officials emphasized their efforts to ensure a smooth primary election in the wake of last November’s voting machine malfunction that “flipped” votes for two judicial retention candidates. The malfunction was caught early, and the votes were corrected, county officials have said.

For the county’s registered Democrats and Republicans, Tuesday’s primary offered choices in several key races. Lehigh Valley Republicans voted among three candidates for the party’s nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Susan Wild in the 7th Congressional District in November’s general election. In one of the bigger races on the Democratic side, Pennsylvania state Rep. Robert Freeman, the Easton area’s longtime representative in Harrisburg, is facing a rare primary challenge from Easton City Councilwoman Taiba Sultana.
