Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman has been selected to receive the Presidential Medallion from the New York City-based Yeshiva University, the highest honor bestowed by the Jewish institution. This recognition underscores Fetterman’s unwavering support for Israel and his active involvement with the student body in combating antisemitism and advocating for the release of hostages since Hamas’ invasion of the Jewish nation in October 2022.
Yeshiva University will award Fetterman the Presidential Medallion during its graduation ceremony for more than 1,700 students on Wednesday. The university referred to Fetterman as an “American patriot and hero of Israel” in a statement, highlighting his dedication to denouncing antisemitism and advocating for the return of hostages.
Rabbi Ari Berman, Yeshiva’s president, commended Fetterman’s “unwavering and courageous commitment to moral clarity,” describing him as one of the “true heroes” of the present day. Berman emphasized the significance of the commencement exercises amidst growing antisemitism nationwide and within the Jewish and American communities.
Fetterman expressed his gratitude for Yeshiva’s invitation, describing it as “truly humbling.” He acknowledged the profound significance of the university’s commencement in the context of rising antisemitism across the nation.
Despite his affiliation with the Democratic Party, Fetterman has distinguished himself with his vocal support for Israel and the IDF’s actions in Gaza. He has publicly expressed his support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas and condemned the terrorist organization for utilizing Palestinian civilians as human shields.
Fetterman’s unwavering stance on Israel has drawn criticism from some of his Democratic colleagues, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who suggested that the U.S. might impose “consequences” on Israel for its actions in Rafah. Fetterman has strongly rejected such claims, maintaining Israel’s right to defend itself and prosecute Hamas to surrender or be eliminated.
In addition to his unwavering support for Israel, Fetterman has also distanced himself from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Despite being labeled as “Bernie Sanders 2.0” by his Republican opponent during the 2022 election, Fetterman has repeatedly asserted that he is not a progressive. He has rejected comparisons to moderate Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, and has expressed his support for President Biden in the 2024 presidential election.
The commencement ceremony honoring Senator Fetterman will take place on Wednesday at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, Queens, according to the university. Fox News Digital’s request for additional comment from Fetterman’s office was not immediately met by press time.
