Pennsylvania Officially Recognizes Diwali as State Holiday, Celebrates Cultural Diversity

In a significant step towards acknowledging and celebrating the rich cultural tapestry of Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro signed a bipartisan bill officially recognizing Diwali as a state holiday. This momentous decision, which takes effect immediately, designates the 15th day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Kartik as “Diwali Day” each year. The upcoming celebration from October 31 to November 1 will be the inaugural official observance under this new law.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a revered festival among the Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist communities. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair – values that resonate deeply with the spirit of Pennsylvania. This recognition goes beyond simply acknowledging a holiday; it signifies a profound commitment to celebrating the cultural contributions of the state’s diverse population, particularly its vibrant Asian American community.

Governor Shapiro emphasized this sentiment in his statement, saying, “By signing this bill into law, we are not only recognizing the importance of Diwali but also celebrating the rich cultural heritage and many contributions of the Asian American community to Pennsylvania.” He further highlighted the symbolic significance of the festival, stating, “Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair – values that should help guide our Commonwealth.”

The Governor’s decision underscores Pennsylvania’s commitment to inclusion, respect, and unity. “Pennsylvania’s strength lies in its diversity,” Governor Shapiro declared, adding that this new holiday reflects the state’s dedication to honoring the traditions and cultures that make it vibrant and dynamic.

While Diwali is now a state holiday, it’s important to note that schools, government offices, and businesses are not mandated to close. The Governor’s office emphasizes that the holiday serves to acknowledge the festival’s cultural significance and encourages all Pennsylvanians to participate in the celebrations.

Governor Shapiro signed the bill during a celebratory event honoring Diwali, Tihar, and Bandi Chhor Diwas, hosted by the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Affairs in Harrisburg. This move underscores the state’s dedication to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all its citizens, recognizing and celebrating the diverse cultural tapestry that makes Pennsylvania a truly unique and vibrant state.
