Performa, the renowned organization dedicated to celebrating performance art, recently threw a dazzling 20th Anniversary Gala at the WSA, a vibrant creative hub in downtown New York City. The night was a whirlwind of artistic expression, honoring the contributions of artists Paul Pfeiffer and Tschabalala Self, both renowned for their innovative work in the performance medium.
From the moment guests arrived, they were greeted by an immersive experience. Curator Job Piston’s “Performa XX: 20 Looks” costume installation set the stage for a night of visual and artistic wonder. As the evening unfolded, a diverse array of artists, performers, and luminaries came together to celebrate Performa’s legacy and the power of artistic expression.
The highlight of the evening was a special performance of Tschabalala Self’s 2021 work, “Sounding Board.” The piece, originally commissioned by Performa, was brought to life with the original costumes (a collaboration between Performa, Self, and UGG) and performers from the original show. Self spoke about the transformative impact of “Sounding Board” on her artistic journey, emphasizing the importance of creating fully immersive experiences.
Renowned photographer Tyler Mitchell, best known for his iconic photograph of Beyoncé for the cover of Vogue’s 2018 September issue, took to the stage to introduce Paul Pfeiffer. Mitchell eloquently described Pfeiffer’s work as “resonating with a complicated clarity. He interrogates devotion, belonging, and desire, forces that bind us or pull us apart.”
In a surprise twist, Pfeiffer, via a pre-recorded message, invited the renowned Marching Cobras marching ensemble to join the celebration. The band burst through the doors with a high-energy performance that had the audience cheering and clapping along. The marching band’s appearance was a nod to Pfeiffer’s 2019 work at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
As the night transitioned from ceremony to celebration, the event transformed into a dynamic after-party, bringing together a constellation of art world stars. Guests like Ebony L. Haynes from 52 Walker, designer Kim Shui, and artists Chloe Wise and Miles Greenberg, alongside prominent members of the downtown literary scene, joined the festivities. The party was a vibrant collaboration with Document Journal and featured high-energy sets from DJs Kevin Aviance, S’aint Panic, and Alyssa Brianna, keeping the party pulsating until the wee hours.
Performa’s 20th Anniversary Gala was a resounding success, showcasing the enduring power of performance art to connect, inspire, and challenge. The event served as a testament to Performa’s commitment to pushing boundaries and supporting artists who are redefining the landscape of contemporary art.
