Perplexity, an artificial intelligence startup backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is stepping into the election arena with a new AI-powered Election Information Hub. This hub, designed to be operational on Election Day, November 5th, promises to provide real-time vote counts, AI-generated summaries of candidates, and answers to voter-related queries.

The live vote count will be powered by data from The Associated Press, while information about polling requirements, locations, and times is sourced from Democracy Works, the same organization that provides similar features for Google. The hub will also offer detailed, AI-summarized analysis of ballot measures and candidates, including official policy stances and endorsements.

Early Challenges and Accuracy Concerns

However, the hub has already encountered some challenges. It failed to mention that Robert F. Kennedy, who was listed on the ballot, had dropped out of the race. It also listed a “Future Madam Potus” candidate, which led to a summary of Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy, accompanied by some meme pictures not usually seen in her summary.

Perplexity spokesperson Sara Plotnick told The Verge that the company is investigating these issues. These errors underscore the challenges of utilizing generative AI for high-stakes applications. Other AI companies, such as OpenAI (ChatGPT), Meta AI, and Google Gemini, have chosen to avoid deploying their AI models for such events.

Perplexity’s Growth and Vision

Despite these initial hiccups, Perplexity is a rapidly growing company. Founded just two years ago, it achieved unicorn status (a valuation exceeding $1 billion) in April 2023. The company’s revenue and usage have skyrocketed by 700% since the start of the year, answering about 250 million questions in July alone.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has been vocal about his desire to disrupt the dominance of Google and Meta in search and advertising. He has criticized Google’s ad-centric approach and is focused on transforming the search engine industry.
