Perungudi Zone in Chennai Wins Best Performing GCC Zone Award

The Perungudi zone in South Chennai, known for its bustling IT hubs and real estate boom, has been declared the best performing GCC zone, receiving the chief minister’s award. This recognition comes after the zone secured a remarkable 231.5 points, surpassing the second-place winner, Madhavaram in North Chennai, which scored 230.5 points.

Perungudi, home to around 40,000 residents, excelled in various categories, including solid waste management, healthcare, city planning, green cover and biodiversity, property tax collection, transport mobility, and infrastructure. Umamaheswari Ramachandran, Assistant Commissioner, General Department, revealed that the evaluation process involved analyzing 63 criteria across various sections based on 800 data points self-declared by the zone. As a reward for its achievement, Perungudi received a grant of 30 lakh rupees, while Madhavaram received 20 lakh rupees.

Perungudi’s success story is marked by a stellar 96% property tax collection rate and the completion of over 80% of the biomining project at the Perungudi landfill. The zone also distinguished itself as a model zone in the Swachh Surekshan awards earlier this year, showcasing its commitment to enforcing plastic bans and resolving over 90% of grievances.

Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar highlighted the significant infrastructure development, including the construction of stormwater drains along the 200-feet radial road. The GCC has reported over 90% completion of various projects. These awards are granted based on a government order from 2012, and the final selection is made by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, headed by Minister K N Nehru.

The Perungudi zone’s triumph serves as a testament to its dedication to sustainable development and community well-being, setting an example for other zones to emulate.
