A pet owner in Thane, India, has been arrested after his Labrador fell from a fifth-floor terrace, killing a 5-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Tuesday, around 4:30 PM, when Sana Shaikh and her mother were stepping out of their building to exchange diapers. The dog, which was on the terrace of the adjacent building, fell onto Sana, causing severe head injuries.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Sana succumbed to her injuries. An autopsy report confirmed the cause of death as excessive bleeding from the head injuries.
The pet owner, Zaher Sayed, was arrested two days later after Sana’s parents filed a complaint. Sayed has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligent conduct with respect to animals. Police are investigating how the dog fell from the terrace and are verifying whether Sayed had a pet license, as he allegedly keeps several dogs on the terrace.
The Labrador, which suffered multiple fractures, is currently recovering at a rescue center. Its condition is described as serious.
This tragic incident has highlighted the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for stricter regulations regarding pet licenses and animal safety. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
