After a detour into the mobile gaming world, Peter Molyneux has announced his return to PC and console gaming with his new title, ‘Masters of Albion.’ Revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, the game has been in development for three years at Molyneux’s studio, 22cans, and is now available for wishlisting on Steam.
‘Masters of Albion’ sees players take on the role of a godlike figure, wielding a giant hand cursor to influence and interact with the game world. The game boasts a deep level of customization, allowing players to control everything from their townsfolk’s diet to their combat prowess. Players can even switch to a third-person perspective to fight monsters as a warrior, or revert to god mode for powerful supernatural attacks.
Molyneux has previously hinted at the game’s development, describing a “mechanic that has never been seen in a game before.” While not explicitly stated during the Gamescom reveal, he has also suggested that the game, previously known by the codename ‘MOAT’, takes place in the same Albion as the iconic ‘Fable’ series.
Known for his work on titles like ‘Fable’ and ‘Populous’, Molyneux has a history of pioneering god games, placing players in a top-down view with immense control over the game world. However, he has also been criticized for making overly ambitious promises about his games, a trend he has acknowledged and regretted. His latest project, ‘Masters of Albion,’ promises a unique and engaging experience, but it remains to be seen if it can deliver on its potential.
