Peterborough Named Most Affordable UK City to Raise a Family Amidst Cost of Living Crisis

Recent reports indicate that an increasing number of young individuals are postponing parenthood due to financial constraints, as the cost of living crisis affects both short-term and long-term financial planning. However, for those considering starting a family, Peterborough has emerged as an ideal destination, being crowned the most affordable UK city for raising children. A thorough analysis by Shepherds Friendly examined key factors in 40 cities, including property prices, rental costs, utilities, childcare expenses, average salaries, and happiness levels. Peterborough emerged victorious, boasting some of the lowest childcare costs in the country (averaging £700 per month) and remarkably affordable utilities (around £160 per month). It surpassed Belfast, Newcastle, and Sunderland to claim the top spot, while London unsurprisingly ranked as the least affordable, followed by Cambridge, Brighton, and Leicester. While average property prices in Peterborough are relatively higher compared to some areas, at around £235,000, they remain significantly lower than major cities like London (£584,459) or neighboring Cambridge (£492,750). Beyond its affordability, Peterborough offers numerous attractions for families. Located in East Anglia, it is approximately 75 miles or an hour by train from London, with a roughly 50-minute commute each way from Cambridge. The city is renowned for its 12th-century Cathedral and boasts a range of history-themed attractions such as the Peterborough Museum, Elton Hall, and Flag Fen Archaeology Park. Outdoor enthusiasts will find over 10 nature reserves and public parks connected by a 45km Green Wheel cycle trail. Peterborough also offers outdoor swimming at the Grade II listed Lido. Additionally, the city center and embankment host regular live events and markets, while the city’s three theaters provide a diverse selection of performances. Despite its affordability and family-friendly attractions, Peterborough has faced criticism. For the past five years, it has consistently ranked among the ‘worst’ places to live in Britain, with residents describing it as ‘dismal’, a ‘dump’, and a ‘cultural dead spot’ with an ‘atmosphere of misery’. They cite recent high street closures, a lack of nightlife, and limited amenities as reasons for their negative perceptions. However, with ongoing regeneration efforts, Peterborough aims to address these concerns and enhance its appeal. For those unable to relocate from London but still aspiring to have children, certain boroughs offer a more family-friendly environment. A study by Making Moves identified Bromley as the top borough, considering factors such as crime rates, commute times to central London, the number of parks, schools, and job vacancies in the area. Sally Evans, the property company’s director of operations, emphasized the benefits of living in boroughs like Bromley while working in the city, promoting a better work-life balance.
