Phase 2 of Miami’s The Underline Opens, Connecting Downtown to Coconut Grove

The much-anticipated Phase 2 of Miami’s The Underline has opened, connecting downtown to historic and vital neighborhoods. This new segment, known as the “Hammock Trail,” spans 2.14 miles from Coral Way to Southwest 19th Avenue, serving areas such as West Brickell, The Roads, Silver Bluff, and Shenandoah.

The Hammock Trail offers a range of amenities, including:

– Safe walking and biking trails
– Enhanced connectivity between neighborhoods
– Public art installations
– Thousands of native plants and trees
– Resting areas with benches or oolitic limestone boulders
– Hydration stations
– Bike repair station at Vizcaya Metrorail station
– Bike racks at all amenity areas
– Doggie-bag dispensers and pet water bowls
– Free Wi-Fi at Vizcaya and Simpson Park Playground areas
– Programmable areas for public events, cultural, educational, and health and wellness programs

Notable features include:

– Hammock Playground: A nature-inspired playground with separated play areas for younger and older children, lush native landscaping, and public art.
– Vizcaya Station Plaza: A gathering space with free community programs, a UMeditate area, and a connection to the historic Vizcaya estate.
– Rain Garden: A bioswale that offsets flooding and stormwater impacts, showcasing environmental resilience and sustainability education.

Phase 2 also includes resilient features such as native landscaping, increased tree shade canopy, Dark Sky compliant LED lighting, and green infrastructure. These enhancements support the restoration of the Pine Rockland, Hardwood Hammock, Pollinator, and Wet Prairie ecosystems.

The entire length of The Underline features safe biking and walking paths, lighting, and improved crosswalks. It also offers public art, free programs, and serves as a platform for community gathering and new connections.

Phase 1, “Brickell Backyard,” opened in 2021 and runs from the Miami River to Coral Way. Phase 3, the final section of The Underline, is set to open in segments beginning next year, completing the entire 10-mile trail.
