Physical Altercation Involving San Jose Mayor’s Security Detail
A physical altercation broke out in downtown San Jose on Tuesday evening between San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s security detail and a pedestrian. The incident, which was captured on video, occurred near 55 S 1st St. while Mahan was in the area for a restaurant opening and in the middle of an interview with KRON4.
The video footage shows the pedestrian approaching the mayor’s protective detail, a San Jose Police Department officer, and engaging in a verbal exchange. The pedestrian then tells the officer to “mind your (explicit) business” and threatens to “smack” him.
The altercation quickly escalated to physical violence, with the pedestrian punching the officer in the head. A struggle ensued, and bystanders intervened to assist the mayor’s security detail. The pedestrian was eventually detained by SJPD officers.
The injured officer sustained an injury during the altercation and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police have submitted evidence to the district attorney’s office, and the suspect has been booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple charges, including felony battery on a police officer.
Mahan was not physically harmed during the incident.
