The Sao Paulo Grand Prix got off to a thrilling start with Oscar Piastri snatching pole position for the Sprint race from his McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The two McLarens locked out the front row, with Norris leading the charge throughout Sprint Qualifying before Piastri made a stunning move at the very end, securing his second Sprint pole by a mere 0.029s.
Charles Leclerc slotted in between the McLarens in third, while championship leader Max Verstappen had to settle for fourth, 0.320s off Piastri’s pace. Despite his commanding lead in the championship standings – 47 points ahead of Norris – Verstappen will have to overcome a challenging starting position in the Sprint.
The race for points in the Sprint promises to be intense, with eight valuable points up for grabs. Carlos Sainz finished fifth, followed by Mercedes’ George Russell in sixth, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in seventh, and Liam Lawson of RB in eighth. Alex Albon took ninth for Williams, while Oliver Bearman, filling in for the unwell Kevin Magnussen, secured a remarkable tenth place for Haas.
The qualifying session saw some surprising eliminations, with Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez both failing to make it through to Q2.
