A Douglas DC-4 plane has crashed into the Tanana River shortly after departing from Fairbanks International Airport. The number of passengers on board is currently unknown. Troopers have issued a statement advising the public to avoid the area where the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have yet to comment on the incident.

The plane crashed shortly after 10.30am on Friday. It is not yet known how many people were on board. The website airlines.net said standard passenger seating for a DC-4 is 44, but most have been converted to freighters.

Troopers said in a statement that people should avoid the Fairbanks area where the crash happened. John Dougherty, a troopers spokesperson, did not answer questions and instead referred reporters to the brief statement.
