Rising Plane Ticket Prices Hit Albertans Hard
Albertans eager to book summer vacations are grappling with significantly higher plane ticket prices. Industry experts attribute the surge to a combination of limited competition and increased demand.
“Prices have skyrocketed. They’ve doubled, if not sometimes tripled,” said Jennie Mohamed, manager at Parklane Travel in Calgary. “Western Canada is particularly affected due to the dominance of WestJet and Air Canada.”
WestJet has announced plans to update its basic fare options, potentially offering lower costs for travelers willing to forgo carry-on bags. The airline is also urging Ottawa to review its fee structure and implement measures to reduce travel expenses.
The Alberta government is exploring ways to enhance regional air travel within the province. Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen has commissioned feasibility studies for 10 municipal airports to expand flight options for Albertans.
Travelers are advised to consider alternative strategies to minimize expenses, such as utilizing points and opting for package deals.
Industry Experts Express Concern
Mohamed fears the elevated airfare prices may become permanent. “Airlines have no incentive to reduce prices as long as demand remains high,” she said.
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech has called for a federal review of airport and aviation infrastructure funding, arguing that the current system contributes to the high costs for travelers.
