Sony has announced another price increase for the PlayStation 5 in its home country of Japan, marking the third time the console’s price has gone up since its launch. Both the standard PS5 with a disc drive and the digital-only PS5 will be affected by the price hike.
The new price for the PS5 disc edition will be 79,980 yen ($550), an increase of roughly 13,000 yen ($90) from its previous price. The PS5 digital edition will now cost 72,970 yen (roughly $506), also increasing by 13,000 yen ($90).
This latest price increase comes at a time when Sony has been vocal about the declining profitability of the PS5. The company has implemented measures to improve profitability, such as introducing revised PS5 models with a focus on digital-only consoles and optional disc drives. These revised models are designed to be lighter, reducing shipping and freight costs.
The repeated price hikes in Japan highlight the challenges Sony faces in navigating the global console market. While the company aims to increase profitability, these price increases could potentially impact console sales, especially in a competitive market where consumers are becoming increasingly price-sensitive.
